Citations- Boost Your Local Business Listings with Citations

Ok, so you’ve taken the time or paid someone to get your business listed in all the major search engines. You’ve up-loaded reviews or got some natural reviews of your business and things are looking good. It should be just a madder of time before your listing starts to show up highly on Google, Yahoo and Bing. Well, depending on how strong your competition is, this may not be happening for you.

That’s were citations come in.

~Online citations are mentions of your business Name, Address, phone number etc. on other lesser known websites or business directories. Such as; Yelp, Best of the Web, CBYP and so on.~ (see an example list at the end of this post.)
These places are where the big boys like Google and Yahoo aggregate a lot of their information. The big boys not only, use these smaller sites to find additional businesses to list on their search engine but, also to determine where and how they index your business on their site.~

Think of it along the same lines as word-of-mouth advertising. The more people that are talking about your business the more business you will receive. The more websites or business directories you get your business listed in, the higher your search engine rankings will be and the more traffic you will receive. The more traffic you receive the more customers or clients you will get.

So, If you are having trouble getting your local business listing high enough in the search engines to get the type of traffic you want, start adding your business information to the list of local business directories below. This is just one of the many services we can do for you at http://consultantsHamiltonoh.com call or write us for your free online marketing analysis.

Is Your Business Properly Listed in the Right Places?

According to Google 4 out of 5 searches on the Internet are for local products and services. One of the quick and easy ways to get in front of these searchers is claim or create a local business listing in all of the major search engines(Google,Yahoo and Bing).

If you have advertised in the Yellow pages or comparable business publication, chances are you all ready have a business listing on the major search engines. But your not done!

You can increase your visibility dramatically and protect the integrity of your business by doing a few simple things.

*Claim Your Listing.
*Complete Your Listing
*Get Reviews

Claim Your Business Listing

Claiming you business listing is fairly simple. Just go to one of the search engines and type in your business name. If there are several businesses with similar names or your part of a franchise you may have to type in a geo targeted keyword, like “Fairfield OH” or “Cincinnati”. For example; If you own a McDonald’s store in Liberty Township you’ll want to type in “McDonald’s Liberty Township” find the listing that matches your location, click on the places link and follow the instructions for claiming your listing.

Completing Your Listing

Some sites will give you a running completion percentage or a list of things to do to get the most out of your listing. Make sure you do everything they ask. If they want pictures give them pictures. Keep your information and categories as uniform as possible from one search engine to another.

Most search engines will want you to verify your listing by post card or automated phone call. So make sure you use the proper address and phone number for your business. In any case they will send you a pin number to enter, in order for your listing to become “active.”

Get Reviews

There is a bit of a debate as to how important online reviews are for your listing. In my opinion; If someone is going to take the time to write nice things about your product or services why not post them anywhere and every where possible.

You can hope that your loyal customers will seek out your business listing and write a review or you can ask customers to fill out a quick serve and add the reviews yourself. But don’t ever lie!

Once you get 5 or more reviews for your listing (on Google) you will get those cool little stars next to your business listing!I hope you found some value in this post. Take the time to look for your business listings, you just might open a whole new revenue stream to grow your business.

Off Page SEO – “Backlinking”

One of the most important if not “THE” most important and valuable things you can do for your website and your business is to build backlinks to your website. A backlink is hyper-link or link from someone else’s website back to your website. You have seen them all over the web. They are usually in a blue text and when you click on them they take to another web page, either on the same sight, as Wikipedia does so well or to a totally different website.

The Importance of Backlinks

Building backlinks is important for several reasons. First, the more websites that have a link back to your website greatly improves your chances of getting more visitors. Second and the most important reason is, search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing count these links as votes of popularity for your website, thus improving your search engine rankings. Search engine rankings are important because they can provide as much as 65% of your total visitors to your website.

Ways to Get Backlinks

Now, there are hundreds of ways to get backlinks. Some of my favorite ways are; Article writing, blog posting, forum posting and directory submissions. These can be time consuming tasks but, they won’t cost you a penny build. You’ll have to measure how much your time is worth and the benefit of building these type of links for yourself.

Article Writing

Article writing is a great way to not only build backlinks but to also build your reputation online as being an authority in your given field. I suggest keeping your article between 350 to 450 words and focusing on one area of interest or problem. For instants; if your a dog trainer, write an article all about “Stop Dog Barking” or Stop Dog Chewing”. You then take that article submit it to an article directory. There are hundreds of article directories on the web. Just go to Google and type in “article directories” and you’ll find a bunch. Some of my favorites are:

*Ezinearticles.com
*goarticles.com
*articledashboard.com
*articlesbase.com
*knol.google.com

The article directories will trade your fresh unique content for a link back to your website. Be sure and read all of the submission guide lines before submitting your article. Don’t forget to add your link in the resource box. Once your article is approved and published you’ll have a backlink to your site.

Blog Posting or Blog Commenting

Most blogs allow you to comment on a blog post and provide a place to add your website. DON’T SPAM!! Take a few minutes and actually read the blog post and then offer a comment that is relative to the blog post you just read. Otherwise your comment will be flagged as spam and you’ll never get a backlink to your site.

To find a blog relative to your website, just go to Google and type in Blog + “your area of business”, such as; “blog dog training” or “attorney blog”…etc.

Forum Posting

Forum posting is a little bit different. If you’ve ever been to a forum you’ll see that at the bottom of every post is a signature area. That is where you can add a link back to your website. You’ll have to register with a good email address and then update your profile with your link. Be sure and read the forum rules, some forums will not let you add a signature until you have made something like 5 posts. Forums are a great place to get to know people and build a following if you provide good content relative to the main subject of the forum.

Directory Submissions

There are thousands of business directories on the web that you can submit to for free. Places like Yelp.com, yp.com, merchant circle, Google Places and Yahoo local etc. Once again you can find them by going to Google and typing in “free business directories”. One word of caution, make sure that every submission is as close to the same as possible with your business name, address, phone number…etc.

Well, that should keep you busy for a while. Backlinking is a time consuming task and takes consistency over time to be effective. We here at consultantsHamiltonOH.com specialize in SEO and backlinking. We have spent thousands of dollars developing software and automated tools that help us do this all important task quickly and consistently so you don’t have to. Keyword Research

Keyword research is probably the most important part of any online marketing campaign. From the domain name you choose to the content you have on your website, optimizing for the proper keywords can make or break your success online.

Just think about it for a second. What keyword or keyword phrase will your prospective client use to find your business listing or website? How many people are searching the web using that exact phase? If that phrase is too broad, you’ll get lots of traffic if you can rank highly enough in the search engines for it but, they won’t be targeted. Too narrow of a keyword and you won’t get any traffic at all.

Take for instance the keyword “Chevy Pickup,” Yeah, you’ll get a lot of traffic to your website if your are able to rank highly for “Chevy pickup” but, you’ll also get a lot of “tire kickers.” Wouldn’t it make more sense to rank for “Red 4×4 Chevy pickup?” or “2010 red 4×4 Chevy pickup /w leather seats?”

You see, the people looking for the later keyword phrase already know what they want and are much more likely to be ready to buy. All you have to do is get in front of them and you basically have them sold if the price is right. And I guarantee it’s much easier to rank for “2010 red 4×4 Chevy pickup /w leather seats” than it is to rank for “Chevy pickup.” Which means less time and effort it is going take to sell that truck.

The other aspect of keyword research many over look is completion. How strong in your competition? How many competitors do you have? How long is it going to take to rank for a certain keyword or keyword phrase? There are many aspects that go into researching your completion that I won’t go into now. For now, I just want to give you a few tools you can use to do some keyword research for yourself.

The number one tool I use to do quick keyword research is Google’s External Keyword tool. You can find it by going to Google and typing in “external keyword tool” or “free keyword tool”, it will be the #1 listing. Once you are there, just type in a keyword or keyword phase and Google will return it’s estimate on the amount of search traffic that keyword receive”s monthly, both globally and locally (locally is the number of searches in the U.S.). Google will also return a list of related keyword terms and their proximate search value.

Example of Google's Keyword Tool

Example of Google's Keyword Tool

Take a little time and play around with this tool. It just might open your eyes to new possibilities and give you an idea of just how many visitors you could possibly get to your website. Who knows, you may uncover a highly profitable keyword with little competition that could make a big difference in your business!
